The mole

Posted: 2017-02-23

Moles are small mammals adapted to a subterranean lifestyle (i.e., fossorial). They have cylindrical bodies, velvety fur, very small, inconspicuous ears and eyes, reduced hind limbs and large paws adapted for digging. Moles can tolerate higher levels of carbon dioxide than other mammals, their blood cells have a special form of haemoglobin which has a higher affinity to oxygen than other forms. Moles are able to reuse oxygen taken in from above ground so that they can survive in low-oxygen environments such as underground burrows. Moles have polydactyl forepaws, each has an extra thumb next to the regular thumb. Moles love earthworms, and this is their primary diet, they will also consume small invertebrates in the soil, also a variety of nuts. Mole runs are actually “worm traps” moles sense when a worm drops down into the tunnel and will quickly run to kill and eat it.
